What is a Flight Restriction Zone?

An FRZ is a controlled area of airspace around an aerodrome where drone flights need permission from air traffic control before they can go ahead. They extend outward from the airport boundary, so a property doesn't need to be right next to a runway to fall inside one.

What if the location is in a restricted area?

It's common, especially near airports, airfields and other sensitive sites. We check every location's airspace before booking, and if it sits within a Flight Restriction Zone, Controlled Airspace or other restricted area, we liaise directly with the relevant air traffic control unit or aerodrome and submit the application on your behalf — handling the paperwork so you don't have to — and confirm the outcome before your shoot date.

How much does it cost?

There's a one time application administration fee of £[TBC] on top of your shoot package, covering our time liaising with air traffic control and preparing the submission.

How long do applications take?

It varies, depending on the ATC unit or aerodrome responsible for that airspace. Some respond within days, others take longer, particularly near busier or major airports. We submit applications as early as possible once your shoot is booked and keep you updated throughout.

What happens if permission is refused?

It's rare, but not impossible. If an ATC unit can't grant clearance, we'll tell you as soon as we know and either plan the shoot without the drone element or look at alternative timing. You'll never be left finding out on the day.

How far in advance should I book if my location needs permission?

As early as you can. Most applications are turned around well within a normal booking window, but locations near major airports can take longer, so the earlier we know, the more time we have to secure clearance before your shoot date.
